My name is Amelia Arvesen. I am highly curious, motivated, observant and prompt which makes me a valuable journalist. My interests are vast but I am most happy writing about adventurers, the environment, good causes, food, trends and travel.

Professional highlights:
Freelancer
Since 2011, I've dedicated my time to purposeful writing. As I work towards my degree in journalism, I can say it's been educational but also profitable because I've been successful enough to sell my work to several publications including Diablo Magazine, The Pleasanton Weekly and Lawrence Kids Magazine.

News editor of the University Daily Kansan
I worked for 18 weeks and countless hours as the news editor of my university's main publication. During the fall 2014 semester, the Before I can write a full paragraph of everything I've learned and how wise I now should feel, I need some time to reflect. However, I can say definitively that I am proud to have covered several complex topics including sexual assault cases, lawsuits, the midterm election and breaking news.

Intern at Diablo Magazine
I worked at an established magazine in the San Francisco East Bay almost two years ago but I still refer to my time with the publication often. It has been my only magazine experience thus far and it stands out because it's what I want to do as a career. During my time, I fact-checked dozens of articles and contributed to an online blog. The most useful skills I left with include a passion for accuracy and love for diversity in storytelling.

What's next for me:
One final semester looms and in that limited amount of time, I will cover legislation in Topeka for a statehouse reporting class. To balance my work load, I will also be freelancing. I am currently working on a few pieces that I can't wait to unveil.

In the summer, I am making plans to travel Europe. I'm justifying the trip by reminding myself that I deserve it and can use the experience to enrich my professional and personal writing. I've worked really hard towards a career in journalism and I know there's more energy to be spent. A month abroad is going to give me the refreshment and inspiration I need to be ready for for full-time work. When I return in August, I hope to have a job as a feature writer or editor at a regional magazine.
